If you are anything like me when it comes to an appointment, you do your best to set yourself up for success and research EVERYTHING. Restaurants reservation? I need to know what’s on the menu, how far away it is from home, will there be parking available, etc. The same applies when you book a bridal appointment - Today we are going into the details of different bridal gown necklines and silhouettes. Knowledge is power, and we are here to help!
Necklines
There are 10 necklines you will find in any luxury bridal boutique. Each one has unique qualities that can elevate the dress, and more often than not, help sway the judgment of any bride.
Sweetheart: Resembles the top portion of a heart shape
Off Shoulder: Wide open top that reveals the shoulders, with sleeves that connect with the lower neckline
V-Neck: As the name implies, this neckline provides a V-shaped opening on the neckline
Scoop: A lowered and rounded neckline, resembling that of a semi-circle
Boat Neck: Generally a wider neckline that sweeps across the collarbone and meets the point of the shoulder
Straight: Most commonly used on strapless dresses, the straight neckline is just that - connecting armpit to armpit
One Shoulder: Either left or right, the dress will be held up with a single strap in an asymmetrical fashion
Square: This neckline mimics that of a squared style, giving the illusion of a longer neck
Illusion: The illusion neckline provides a thin, see-through layer of fabric - used to host floral appliques, lace, and other details, or provide that of a backless gown
High Neck: As implied, the top of this neckline will hit at or above the collarbone
SILHOUETTES
When it comes to the body of the dress, there are 4 silhouettes to be familiar with as you head into your bridal gown appointment.
Ballgown: This silhouette has a fitted bodice with a flared waist skirt. The skirt is made to show dramatic volume to offset the waist. Also referred to as the ‘Princess Gown’.
A-Line: Similar to the ballgown in the fitted bodice, however, this A-Line gradually flares out into a lighter, less dramatic skirt. Think of the capital letter A!
Sheath: Fitted and straight cut, the Sheath dress is growing in popularity for its ‘shoulder to heel’ flattering fit.
Fit & Flare: Also commonly known as the ‘Mermaid’ or ‘Trumpet’ fit, this silhouette provides a fitted bodice down to the knee, where it then flares out into a dramatic skirt. Therefore, giving the wearer a more defined hourglass shape.
There are endless combinations of necklines and silhouettes that designers around the world are sending into production. But the fun doesn’t end there… Keep an eye out for future posts as we take on the world of wedding dress details!
